When to Visit Japan

Cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, festival season, or the cheapest prices of the year — the right month depends entirely on what you're chasing.

The direct answer: late March–April and late October–November have the best weather and scenery (cherry blossoms and autumn leaves), but also the highest prices and the biggest crowds — book 4–6 months ahead. If you'd rather save money and skip the crowds, February and June are the two most underrated months to go.

The Four Seasons, Honestly

Spring

Mar – May

Weather: 10–20°C, mild and often clear

Crowds: Very high (late Mar–early Apr)

Best overall weather, but book 4–6 months ahead for cherry blossom season.

Summer

Jun – Aug

Weather: Hot, humid, rainy in June

Crowds: High in August (Obon holiday)

Skip if you dislike heat — but fireworks festivals and cheaper flights make it work for some.

Autumn

Sep – Nov

Weather: 15–23°C, dry and crisp

Crowds: Very high (mid-Nov foliage peak)

Ties with spring for the best weather of the year, with fewer typhoons than early September suggests.

Winter

Dec – Feb

Weather: 0–10°C, dry, snow in the north

Crowds: Low (except New Year week)

Cheapest flights and hotels, illuminations, and skiing in Hokkaido — most underrated season.

High during Golden Week, moderate after

Avoid Golden Week dates specifically; the rest of May is excellent.

June

Rainy season (tsuyu)

Hydrangeas bloom

Low

Underrated for budget travel if you don't mind an umbrella.

July

Hot, humid, rain clears mid-month

Gion Matsuri (Kyoto), fireworks festivals

Moderate

Late July rewards you with festivals once the rain stops.

August

Hottest month, 30°C+

Obon holiday (mid-Aug — domestic travel peak)

Very high mid-month

Hot and crowded — avoid Aug 13–16 if possible.

September

Still hot, typhoon risk

Typhoon season (peak risk)

Low

Cheap, but check storm forecasts before booking non-refundable trains.

October

Cooling down, comfortable

Autumn foliage starts in Hokkaido/Tohoku

Moderate

One of the best all-around months — good weather, fewer crowds than November.

November

Cool, dry, clear

Peak autumn leaves (Kyoto, mid-late Nov)

Very high

Rivals April for beauty and for how far ahead you need to book.

December

Cold, dry
