Kit Kat (Japan flavours)
Food & Drinkunder ¥1,000

キットカット

Kit Kat (Japan flavours)

All Japan

Japan has over 400 Kit Kat flavours — matcha, sakura, sake, wasabi, purple sweet potato. Each region has exclusive flavours only sold locally. They're inexpensive, well-packaged, and universally loved.

Where to buy

Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson), airports, train station souvenir shops

Why it's worth it

Light, cheap, and impossible to get abroad. Buy the regional exclusives — they double as local curiosities.

Furoshiki Wrapping Cloth
Craft & Art¥1,000–¥5,000

風呂敷

Furoshiki Wrapping Cloth

Kyoto / All Japan

The traditional Japanese wrapping cloth is having a revival. Modern furoshiki come in bold graphic patterns and can be used as a tote bag, wine carrier, wall hanging, or gift wrap — zero waste, endlessly reusable.

Where to buy

Ippodo Gallery (Kyoto), department stores, craft shops in Nishiki Market

Why it's worth it

Doesn't take up luggage space on the way there. Rolls up to nothing.

Tenugui Hand Towel
Craft & Artunder ¥1,000

手拭い

Tenugui Hand Towel

All Japan

A thin cotton towel printed with traditional and contemporary patterns — seasons, flowers, animals, abstract geometry. The fabric is meant to fray slightly at the edges, which improves with washing. Used as a hand towel, headband, or framed as art.

Where to buy

Craft shops, department stores, 100-yen shops (for basic ones), specialty tenugui shops in Tokyo

Why it's worth it

Genuinely functional, beautifully designed, costs almost nothing.

Wagashi (Traditional Sweets)
Food & Drink¥1,000–¥5,000

和菓子

Wagashi (Traditional Sweets)

Kyoto

Delicate confections made from sweet bean paste, mochi, and seasonal ingredients — shaped like plum blossoms, autumn leaves, or snow. From Kyoto's Tsuruya Yoshinobu or Kagizen Yoshifusa, they're edible art. Short shelf life — consume within a week.

Where to buy

Wagashi specialty shops: Tsuruya Yoshinobu (Kyoto), Toraya (Tokyo/Kyoto), train station gift floors

Why it's worth it

Short shelf life means you have to eat them — a good problem. Beautiful presentation makes them feel like a real gift.

Kokeshi Doll
Craft & Art¥1,000–¥5,000

こけし

Kokeshi Doll

Tohoku (Sendai, Yamagata)

Simple, handcrafted wooden dolls from the Tohoku mountain hot spring towns. Each regional style is distinct — some tall and cylindrical with delicate painted flowers, others squat with bold geometric patterns. Traditional ones are signed by the craftsperson.

Where to buy

Tohoku craft shops, Zao Onsen, Naruko Onsen, department stores nationwide

Why it's worth it

Recognizably Japanese without being a mass-produced tchotchke. Signed examples are collectible.

Local Sake (Nihonshu)
Food & Drink¥1,000–¥5,000

日本酒

Local Sake (Nihonshu)

Fushimi (Kyoto) / Nada (Kobe) / Niigata

Japan has over 1,800 active sake breweries. Buying directly from a small kura (brewery) in Fushimi or Niigata gives you access to labels that never leave Japan. Junmai daiginjo is the premium grade — fruity, aromatic, cold-served.

Where to buy

Directly from breweries, specialty sake shops, Isetan or Takashimaya department stores

Why it's worth it

You genuinely cannot get the good stuff outside Japan. The bottle is the memory.

Japanese Sunscreen
Beautyunder ¥1,000

日焼け止め

Japanese Sunscreen

All Japan

Japanese sunscreen is genuinely different — lightweight, non-greasy, with UV-A and UV-B protection that surpasses most Western formulas. Anessa, Biore UV Aqua Rich, and Skin Aqua are cult favourites that cost a fraction of what they'd cost imported.

Where to buy

Any drugstore (Matsukiyo, Sundrug, Cosmos), convenience stores

Why it's worth it

Cult status globally but ordinary and cheap in Japan. Buy several — they make great gifts.

Noren Doorway Curtain
Home¥1,000–¥5,000

暖簾

Noren Doorway Curtain

All Japan

The divided fabric curtain hung in doorways and shop entrances is one of Japan's most elegant pieces of functional design. Modern interpretations use traditional indigo dyeing (shibori) or woodblock-print patterns. Hang in a doorway or window at home.

Where to buy

Craft shops in Kyoto and Tokyo, Nishiki Market, online from Japanese craft stores

Why it's worth it

Uniquely Japanese, practical, and beautiful as a piece of home decor.

Stationery (Hobonichi / Midori)
Craft & Art¥1,000–¥5,000

文房具

Stationery (Hobonichi / Midori)

Tokyo

Japan's stationery culture is unmatched. The Hobonichi Techo planner, Midori notebooks, SAKURA pens, and Stalogy grid paper are beloved by designers and journalers worldwide. Itoya in Ginza is a 12-floor stationery department store.

Where to buy

Itoya Ginza (Tokyo), Loft, Tokyu Hands, any convenience store for basics

Why it's worth it

Light, useful, and the quality is something you notice every day.

Ceremonial Matcha
Food & Drink¥1,000–¥5,000

抹茶

Ceremonial Matcha

Uji (Kyoto)

Uji, just outside Kyoto, produces Japan's finest matcha. Ceremonial-grade powder from Ippodo or Marukyu Koyamaen is a world away from the green powder sold abroad — vivid emerald, intensely umami, smooth without bitterness.

Where to buy

Ippodo Tea (Kyoto/Tokyo), Marukyu Koyamaen (Uji), specialty tea shops

Why it's worth it

The quality difference from what you can buy at home is immediate and obvious.

Shopping in Japan — a few tips

Tax refunds for tourists

Japan has a tourist tax refund scheme. Buy over ¥5,000 at eligible stores and present your passport — you save 10% on the spot. Look for the 'Tax Free' sign.

Department store basement floors

The B1 and B2 floors of Isetan, Takashimaya, or Mitsukoshi are dedicated food halls — the best place to buy wagashi, pickles, sake, and premium packaged gifts.

Don't buy at airports

Airport souvenir shops charge a premium for the same goods you'll find for 30–50% less at train station souvenir areas (called 'ekiben' or 'omiyage' shops) or in-city department stores.
