Why Wander Japan exists

I'm Shota, and I run Wander Japan from Japan — not as a remote content project written from somewhere else about a country I visited once. That matters more than it sounds: a lot of the English-language advice aimed at visitors to Japan is written by people who don't live here, and it shows in small ways — fares that haven't been checked in years, transit passes that were discontinued, recommendations that don't hold up once you're actually standing at the station.

Every city guide, itinerary, and recommendation on this site is built around one question — what would actually help someone standing at the airport, phone in hand, trying to figure out what to do next? That's why it covers things other guides skip: which IC card to get, which escalator side to stand on, how not to overpay for a JR Pass, which souvenirs are worth the suitcase space. Prices and transit details get re-checked, not written once and left to go stale.

Wander Japan is still small and growing — I'd rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise. It's supported by affiliate partnerships with the hotels, tour operators, eSIM providers, and services linked throughout the site — full details are on the disclosure page. Those partnerships fund the research and writing, but don't dictate what gets recommended. If something is featured here, it's because it genuinely earns a visitor's time or money.
