Overview

Hakone is where Tokyo comes to decompress. A 90-minute train ride from Shinjuku puts you in a landscape of hot spring towns, volcanic valleys, and — on clear mornings — a view of Mt. Fuji framed across Lake Ashi that makes the journey feel obligatory. The classic Hakone loop connects everything in a single day: the scenic Romancecar train, a mountain switchback railway, a ropeway over Owakudani's sulphur vents, a cruise across the crater lake, and a bus back. Do it as a day trip, or stay overnight in one of Japan's best onsen ryokan — the experience is profoundly different when you slow down.

The most useful phrase in Hakone — every neighbourhood has an onsen, and locals are genuinely happy to point the way.

グルメ

Must Eat in Hakone

Kuro-tamago

黒たまご

Hard-boiled eggs cooked in Owakudani's sulphuric hot springs — the shells turn black, the egg inside is normal. Local legend says each one adds seven years to your life. They taste like eggs. The setting is the point.

Where: Owakudani dining facilities · Ropeway station vendors

budget

¥500 (5 eggs)

Kaiseki at a Ryokan

懐石料理

Hakone's high-end ryokan serve kaiseki that rivals anything in Kyoto — seasonal produce from surrounding farms, served in your room by staff in kimono. Usually included in the ryokan rate.

Where: Gora Kadan · Sengokuhara ryokan · Hakone-Yumoto top-tier inns

budget

¥15,000–¥30,000+ (usually included in overnight ryokan rate)

Soba

そば

The mountainous Hakone area has a long soba tradition. Cold zaru soba with local Izu wasabi — one of Japan's finest growing regions — or hot kake soba in rich mushroom broth. Both outstanding after a day outdoors.

Where: Nenohananaka Soba (Moto-Hakone) · Hakone-Yumoto town restaurants

budget

¥900–¥1,600

Odawara Kamaboko

小田原かまぼこ

Hakone's gateway city Odawara is the kamaboko (fish cake) capital of Japan. Dense, springy fish cake served steamed, fried, or in oden broth. Pick one up at Odawara Station and eat it fresh.

Where: Suzuhiro (Odawara) · Odawara Station souvenir shops

budget

¥300–¥900

Amazake

甘酒

A sweet, thick fermented rice drink — non-alcoholic or very mildly so — sold hot at shrine and temple stalls throughout Hakone. Essential when the mountain air turns cold.

Where: Hakone Shrine lakeside stalls · Moto-Hakone vendors

budget

¥300–¥500

日帰り旅行

Day Trips from Hakone

Mt. Fuji (Fujisan)

45 min by bus to Fujinomiya 5th Station

Hakone is the best base for Fuji — views across Lake Ashi, or climbing it in summer (July–August only).

Atami

30 min by JR from Odawara

Retro hot spring town on the Izu Peninsula — beach onsen, the MOA Museum of Art, and excellent seafood.

Kamakura

1 hr by JR via Odawara and Yokohama

Giant Buddha, coastal temples, and the sea. Combines naturally with Hakone for a two-day Kanagawa trip.

Tokyo

90 min by Romancecar from Hakone-Yumoto

The return journey at sunset is its own experience — the Romancecar observation car fills up fast.

Practical Tips

The Hakone Free Pass (¥6,100 from Shinjuku) covers the Romancecar train, all Hakone buses, the mountain railway, ropeway, and Lake Ashi cruise. It almost always saves money over buying separately.

Mt. Fuji is visible only on clear mornings, most reliably October–February. Check the forecast the evening before — don't assume.

The classic loop (Romancecar → switchback train → ropeway → cruise → bus) takes about 6–7 hours. Start from Tokyo no later than 8am.

Book onsen ryokan at least 6–8 weeks ahead. Autumn and cherry blossom periods sell out months in advance.
