Overview

Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital for over a thousand years, and it shows. The city is denser with temples, shrines, craft traditions, and culinary history than anywhere else in the country. Don't make the mistake of trying to tick everything off — Kinkaku-ji is worth seeing, but the unmapped machiya alley in Nishijin where a weaver has worked the same loom for 40 years is the memory you'll keep. Two to four days minimum; three nights is the sweet spot.

Always ask before photographing people or private temple interiors — especially in Gion where geisha work.

日帰り旅行

Day Trips from Kyoto

Nara

45 min by train

500 free-roaming deer, Todai-ji's giant Buddha, and ancient Shinto shrines.

Osaka

15 min by Shinkansen / 30 min by Hankyu

Completely different energy — loud, street food-forward, and fun.

Uji

20 min by train

Matcha capital of Japan, Byodo-in temple, and the Uji River.

Kurama & Kibune

45 min by Eizan Railway

Mountain onsen village — quiet, green, and very different from central Kyoto.

Practical Tips

Avoid rush hour buses (7:30–9am, 5:30–7:30pm). They are genuinely overcrowded.

Fushimi Inari is best at 5am or after 8pm — the daytime crowds are significant.

Most temples have entrance fees (¥500–¥1,000). Budget ¥3,000–¥5,000 just for admissions per day.

Gion Matsuri (July) and Jidai Matsuri (October) are spectacular festivals — book accommodation months ahead.
