Overview

Most visitors come to Hiroshima to understand something — and they leave having understood more than they expected. The Peace Memorial Park and Museum are unlike anything else in Japan: direct, quiet, and deeply moving without being exploitative. But Hiroshima today is a confident, lively city with exceptional food and warm people. Just 15 minutes by ferry from the mainland sits Miyajima, one of Japan's most iconic islands — its orange torii gate appears to float on the sea at high tide, deer wander the temple paths, and Mount Misen offers the finest views in western Japan. One to two days is right.

In Hiroshima, a sincere thank you carries particular weight. The city's warmth toward visitors is genuine and unhurried.

グルメ

Must Eat in Hiroshima

Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki

広島焼き

Hiroshima's okonomiyaki layers its ingredients — batter, cabbage, noodles, egg — rather than mixing them. Richer and more substantial than Osaka's version. Locals are passionately proud of the difference.

Where: Mitchan (original, est. 1950) · Okonomimura (six-floor building of competing shops)

budget

¥900–¥1,500

Kaki (Hiroshima Oysters)

牡蠣

Hiroshima produces 60% of Japan's oysters. Served grilled in the shell, fried as kaki-fry, in rice, or in ponzu. The stalls at Miyajima's ferry pier sell them fresh off the grill — eat standing, immediately.

budget

Momiji Manju

もみじ饅頭

Hiroshima's signature sweet — a maple-leaf-shaped cake filled with red bean paste, custard, or matcha. Found everywhere on Miyajima. Buy fresh from a shop with a visible griddle rather than pre-packaged.

Where: Miyajima island shops · Hiroshima Station kiosks

budget

¥160–¥300 each

Anago-meshi

あなご飯

Sea eel (anago) over rice — a Hiroshima and Miyajima specialty with a gentler, less fatty flavour than the freshwater eel used elsewhere in Japan. The bento boxes at Hiroshima Station are celebrated nationwide.

Where: Ueno (Hiroshima Station bento) · Miyajima restaurants

budget

¥1,200–¥2,500

Lemon Ramen

レモンラーメン

Hiroshima and the nearby Setouchi coast are Japan's top lemon producers. Some Onomichi ramen shops add a slice of fresh lemon — the bright citrus against a rich soy broth is surprisingly effective.

Practical Tips

The Peace Memorial Museum (¥200) is one of the most important museums in Japan. Allow at least 2 hours and go in the morning before school groups arrive.

The Hiroshima Toyu Pass covers trams and the ferry to Miyajima — check dates and zones before buying (¥1,000/day).

On Miyajima: visit the floating torii at low tide to walk around it and at high tide when it appears to float on the sea. Check tide times before going.

Momiji manju fresh from the oven (look for shops with a visible griddle) are in a different league from pre-packaged versions.
